Engineering Mechanics

About the subject:

Engineering mechanics is the application of mechanics to solve problems involving common engineering elements. The goal of this Engineering Mechanics course is to expose students to problems in mechanics as applied to plausibly real-world scenarios.

Topics to be covered in this seminar:

Units and Dimensions – Laws of Mechanics – Equilibrium of a particle – Forces in space – Equilibrium of a particle in space – Equivalent systems of forces –Principle of transmissibility– Types of supports –Action and reaction forces –Moments and Couples – Varignons theorem – Single equivalent force -Equilibrium of Rigid bodies in two dimensions –Theorems of Pappus - Principal moments of inertia of plane areas –Principal axes of inertia- Relative motion – Curvilinear motion -Newtons laws of motion - Impulse and Momentum – Impact of elastic bodies. Friction force – Rolling resistance -Translation and Rotation of Rigid Bodies – Velocity and acceleration – General Plane motion of simple rigid bodies such as cylinder, disc/wheel and sphere.
